My Impressions about Velvet Buzzsaw: the Relationship between Art World and Supernatural

Rene Russo, Jake Gyllenhaal and Zawe Ashton: the main characters of Velvet Buzzsaw.
(photo - Archive)
After a great debut in Nightcrawler, in 2014, Dan Gilroy did a similar version of that movie, now retitled as Velvet Buzzsaw. If Nightcrawler retreated the television world, Velvet Buzzsaw retreats the art world. The movie was great in special effects, screams and obviously, the main cast.

Rene Russo and Jake Gyllenhaal. (photo - Netflix)
Rene Russo's Rhodora Haze is a mix of two characters made by her: Nina Romina, of Nightcrawler, and Catherine Banning, of Thomas Crown Affair. Rhodora is ambitious, smart, sexy and elegant. Ex-punk rocker, now a gallery owner, along with Josephina (Zawe Ashton), an ambitious gallery worker, Morf (Jake Gyllenhaal), an art critic, and Gretchen (Toni Collette), a consultant, are involved into a painter called Vetril Dease.

In my opinion, the supernatural part of the movie was inspired on the music video Somewhere I Belong, by California band Linkin Park, in 2003.

Billy Magnussen (Bryson) and Daveed Diggs (Damrish), who were revealed on Law and Order franchise, along with Natalia Dyer (Coco), revealed on the Netflix series Stranger Things, Tom Sturridge (Jon Dondon) and John Malkovich (Piers) are also great, even on small roles.

Rene Russo in Velvet Buzzsaw: extremely elegant as always.

Dan Gilroy is an L.A. version of also director Martin Scorsese, because he shows a darker version of Los Angeles, and Martin Scorsese shows a darker version of New York City (as shown in Taxi Driver, with Robert De Niro). The only thing missing in Gilroy's movies is a director cameo (like Scorsese and Quentin Tarantino, from Pulp Fiction).

I hope the next Dan Gilroy movie will be about the fashion world, inspired in the music video Beautiful Girl, by INXS, and starring Jake Gyllenhaal, Rene Russo and one of the past romantic pairs of Rene Russo (more likely Robert De Niro or Pierce Brosnan).

Hope u like it.

Rene Russo Valentine's Day Special: The Happy Marriage Between Rene Russo and Dan Gilroy !

Rene Russo and Dan Gilroy: a great 27 - year marriage.
(photo - JB Lacroix)
Since June 12 was celebrated the Valentine's Day on Brazil and on this Monday, June 24, will be Dan Gilroy's birthday (Gilroy will be 60 years old), I'll have the opportunity to talk about the happy 27-year marriage of Rene Russo and Dan Gilroy. For a great relationship like Rene and Dan, it'll be necessary love, trust and care.

It's not often heard the love between great actresses and great directors/screenwriters. Back to summer 1992, Rene and Mr. Gilroy had married and ever since they were inseparable. The couple worked together in Nightcrawler in 2014 (which it was Dan's directing debut), and recently on Velvet Buzzsaw, in the beginning of this year. Independently of the marriage, Rene Russo has shown lots of her natural talent and beauty as always.

Moving forward to August 31, 1993, the couple welcomed a beautiful girl called Rose Jean Gilroy, who is now a successful rising model. Rose has modelled for famous brands known by lots of people, such as Dolce & Gabbana and Salvatore Ferragamo; and recently did modeling campaigns for ready-to-wear brands such as ALC Ltd. and Wild Fox Couture.

Every time you see Rene Russo on the street, you even ask yourself: “Did she drink the fountain of youth? “

Last night in Los Angeles, for “Velvet Buzzsaw” premiere, Ms. Russo was the center of attentions, because of sexiness, elegance and mainly, youth. Along with a clean makeup, with red lips, she wore a beautiful black blouse with black PVC trousers ! And we all looooved it !

She came along with Director Dan Gilroy and her 25-year-old daughter, Rose Gilroy.

Rene Russo Fanpage News: Rene Russo revealed in First Official Image of "Velvet Buzzsaw"

Rene Russo and Jake Gyllenhaal will be Rhodora Haze and Morf Vandewalt, respectively,
in Dan Gilroy's new film. (picture credits: Sundance Institute)
The years pass by, and Rene Russo still is a chic and beautiful actress!! From the upcoming film Velvet Buzzsaw, directed by Dan Gilroy, it's a Nightcrawler reunion in the first image. And it was just announced in the lineup at the 2019 Sundance Festival and we're just.... excited !!!!

It is described as thriller set in the contemporary art world scene of Los Angeles, “where big money artists and mega-collectors pay a high price when art collides with commerce.” The film was produced by Netflix and will debut on the streaming service at some point next year.

We can't wait to watch this movie!!!

Rene Russo Fanpage Presents: Rose Gilroy Special - Like Mother, Like Daughter!

Rene Russo and Rose Gilroy: inherited beauty.
Rose Jean Gilroy was born in August 31, 1993, in Los Angeles, California. She is the result of the inherited (and infinite) beauty of Rene Russo and the inherited talent of both Dan Gilroy and Ms. Rene Russo. Two years ago, Ms. Gilroy became a very gifted and attractive model. And she appeared in diverse fashion campaigns and runway shows, from Dolce & Gabbana and Tory Burch to Salvatore Ferragamo (how chic!)

Rose Gilroy in action in the streets of New York: elegance and sexiness.
Rose is even a city girl or a beach girl... When we describe Ms. Gilroy as "the city girl", I imagine her in New York City (like in this pic above), Milan or Paris; when we describe her as "the beach girl", I imagine her mainly in California beaches. According to Rose to Tory Burch site: "There are so many beautiful beaches across the California coast. One of my favorite summer getaways is Big Sur. The drive there from L.A. has stunning ocean views and it’s such a nice break from the city.". Great recommendation, Rose!

Rose in a Salvatore Ferragamo fashion campaign ... BEAUTIFUL !
(photo - Ungano & Agriodimas)
One of my favorite Rose Gilroy's fashion campaigns is obviously Salvatore Ferragamo, in 2016. In my opinion, she shows her elegance just like mom in the 70s and 80s, despite her age. And a beautiful detail: it has a portrait of Rose, like a child, along with her mom Rene, truly proving that beauty and cuteness is in the Russo-Gilroy family.

Like Ms. Rene Russo, Rose Gilroy has sensuality in her DNA, besides her young age.
(photo - Ungano & Agriodimas)
A good piece of advice from Ms. Rene to the lovely Rose:

"My mom always says that to look good you have to feel confident in what you’re wearing. She taught me to stay true to myself and wear what I feel most comfortable in. Part of having great style is allowing your personality to show in a way that is unique to you."

Happy birthday to you, Rose Gilroy. Wish u all the best.

Hope u like it.

RENE RUSSO FANPAGE PRESENTS: Dan Gilroy Special!!!

Dan Gilroy, 2017. (photo credits: Jay L. Clendenin/Getty Images)

Daniel Christopher Gilroy, known as Dan Gilroy, was born in June 24, 1959, in Santa Monica, California (USA). He is son of Frank D. Gilroy (Pullitzer-prize winning dramatist) and Ruth Dorothy Gaydos (sculptor & writer)... also brother of Tony Gilroy (director and producer, known for Michael Clayton and The Bourne Legacy), and John Gilroy (his twin brother, John is a film editor). Dan's main inspiration was his dad: When Dan was a young boy, he saw his father writing and it simplified his difficulties of becoming a writer.

Even born in Santa Monica, Dan grew up in Washingtonville, New York, on Orange County. There he attended Washingtonville High School, and in 1981, he graduated from Darthmouth College (New Hampshire), with a degree in English literature.

His screenwriting career began with Freejack (1992), directed by Geoff Murphy, and starring her future and now wife, the lovely Rene Russo (and both have a beautiful daughter, Rose, born in August 31, 1993). Dan and Rene will marry 2 months later after the film premiere. After that, in 1994, Dan will also write Chasers (1994), directed by Dennis Hopper (known for Blue Velvet, Waterworld, Speed and many others), and starring Tom Berenger (Rene worked with Tom in Major League, in 1989, but also great in Somebody's Watching over Me, Betrayed, and Platoon).

Way years later, Dan also write Two for the Money (2005), The Fall (2006), Real Steel (2011), The Bourne Legacy (2012) (his brother Tony directed the movie), and recently, Kong: Skull Island (2017).

Now to his directing career... His directing debut was Nightcrawler (2014), starring Rene Russo, Jake Gyllenhaal and Riz Ahmed. Dan's inspiration: a photo-book called Naked City, a photo collection taken by American-Hungarian photographer Weegee about 1940s New York City's residents at night. The movie was well received by the public and critics.

Last year, he directed Roman J. Israel, Esq. (2017), with Denzel Washington and Colin Farrell. Gilroy conceived of Roman J. Israel after doing extensive research about the 1960s where many Americans have staunchly protested and advocated certain individual and group rights. With Nightcrawler and Roman J. Israel, Esq., Dan proved he has lots of talent.

This year, he will direct and write Velvet Buzzsaw (2018). In recent interviews, Dan said it was inspired by The Player (1992), by Robert Altman. And it also reunites Rene Russo, Jake Gyllenhaal and John Malkovich (Rene and John Malkovich worked together 25 years ago, in the movie In the Line of Fire, in 1993). We are so excited!

Hope u like it.

CHARACTER IN FOCUS: Nina Romina, "Nightcrawler" (2014)

Rene Russo as Nina in Nightcrawler (2014) (photo credits: Open Road Films)
For Rene (Russo), Nina Romina, from "Nightcrawler" was the most challenging character in her career. Her main mantra is "if it bleeds, it leads" (main words of sensationalism journalism). This talented actress initially didn't need any reference or inspiration in her real life for this situation. Until she said: “I realized, Oh my God, I have crossed many moral boundaries in my life and it’s always been out of fear or loss or desperation”.

Lorna from Lethal Weapon 3 and Nina from Nightcrawler: same atitude and same beauty, but different ways
to cope with the "weapon" (photo credits: Warner Bros Pictures/Laura Cavanaugh - Getty Images/
collage:M.E.Serrano)

Like I said on the second part of Rene's bio on my blog, Nina Romina has some similarities with Lorna Cole in Lethal Weapon 3 (1992), in attitude and beauty aspects. But in coping with the "weapon", it's different: with Lorna, she uses the gun as a weapon (because she's an internal affairs detective); now with Nina, the words are her "weapon" (like in Madonna's song Words in 1992: "words, they cut like a knife, cut into my life".), because in Nightcrawler, Nina works as a news director. Relating Madonna's song to Rene's character... Lou (portrayed by the talented Jake Gyllenhaal)'s words cut like a knife, making Nina a victim (Lou, in Nightcrawler, is the sociopath of the story).

Rene Russo, as always, doesn't lose her beauty! (photo credits: Open Road Films)

And back to Nina... many people are divided: “People have told me she’s a victim, others have told me she’s completely in control. Some people find her sympathetic and others just find her to be a bitch and evil. So I’ve been given a lot of credit for all kinds of performances I wasn’t aware of. " laughed Rene. When Nina shouts at Lou: “I want what you promised me. I want something people can’t turn away from.", it brings some climax to the movie!!!

and Nina. (photo credits: Open Road Films)
Release Date: September 5, 2014 (TIFF/Canada) / October 31, 2014 (USA) / December 18, 2014 (Brazil)
Running Time: 117 min.
Budget / Box office: $8.5 million / $50.3 million (Box office success).
Plot summary: Los Angeles, California. The thief Louis Bloom (Jake Gyllenhaal, great in Donnie Darko, Brokeback Mountain), known as Lou, has been caught stealing from a L.A. construction site by a security guard. To get rid of the crime, Lou attacks the guard, steals the watch and runs away with the material. After selling this material, Lou asks for a job, but the construction supervisor tells him he doesn't hire thieves.
While driving home, Lou sees a car crash on the middle of the road... and the freelance photojournalists arrive and record two police officers pulling a wounded woman from the crash. One of these photojournalists, Joe Loder (Bill Paxton, of Twister), tells Lou that they sell their footage to local news stations.

Inspired, Lou steals a bike and trades it for a recording camera and a police radio scanner. After two failed attempts, he records a fatal carjacking and sells it to KWLA (channel 6). The morning news director, Nina Romina (Rene Russo), tells him the station is interested in footage of graphic/violent incidents (such as accidents involving cars, buses, trains, planes, etc.) in influent areas. And for the job to be more efficient and with more impact, Lou hires an assistant, Rick (Riz Ahmed), a young man desperate for money, and begins tampering crime scenes. In one of them, he moves a body. As Lou's work gains attention, he buys better equipment and a faster car.

Then, Lou and Nina go to a Mexican restaurant, talking about his sucess as a reporter. But things go wrong when he threatens her to end her business unless she has sex with him. And her job depend on his footage. Nina agrees hesitantly.
The following day, Lou turns down an offer from Loder, who beats him in a plane crash story in Foothill, and Nina scolded her job partner (Lou), explaining him to get better footage! To give Loder the payback, Lou sabotaged his van, leaving him injured.
Later, Lou and Rick arrive before the police at a home invasion in Granada Hills, and Lou records the shooters leaving with their SUV. Result: Nina is so anxious with this story.... in return, Lou requests more public credit and money.
And the climax begins when detective Frontieri (Michael Hyatt) doubts Lou about the home invasion footage, and he gives his edited version, cutting out the shooters' footage parts. Posterior to that, he and Rick follow the shooters to a more crowded area, and then, Lou's assistant claims half of the money of the initial request, menacing to tell the police about Lou's crimes, and he admits.
The shooters enter at the restaurant, and Lou phones the police. They shoot each other, and one of the suspects is killed while the other escapes with the SUV. And soon after the shooter's SUV crashes, Lou persuades Rick to film him, saying he's dead, but in reality it was contrary: the shooter was alive; and shoots Rick through the glass and tries to flee. But Lou's assistant is dead by the police. So Lou said to Rick he couldn't work with someone who has more advantage than him.
Rene as Nina Romina. Chic as always!
The ending of Nightcrawler is when Nina was amazed with Lou's final footage involving Rick, and she expresses her devotion by him. But the news team found out that the home invasion didn't work out; and Nina refused to report the information to maximize the impact. Result: The police tries to confiscate the evidence, but Nina defend the right to reserve it.
And Lou hires a team of freelancers and interns, and buys new vans to grow his business.

Fun facts about the movie:
- Nina Romina was specially written for Rene Russo, his wife in real life. For Gilroy, Nina was described as "hard-nosed corporate malicious woman". And Russo brought a sense of vulnerability to the character.
- Jake Gyllenhaal and Rene Russo had a very great chemistry in scene; and they would work again in Velvet Buzzsaw (also directed by Dan Gilroy) this year, premiering October 26, on Netflix.
- Jake had his own idea of losing 20 pounds for this movie. He visualized Lou as a hungry coyote.
- Like Donnie Darko (2001) and Prisoners (2013), Jake Gyllenhaal blinked rarely in Nightcrawler. And Donnie Darko is one of my favorite movies of Jake.
- And it was also Dan Gilroy's directorial debut after years producing movies. Some of them were starred by Rene Russo, such as Freejack (1992) and Two for the Money (2005).

Critical reception:

  • IMDB: 7,9/10
  • Rotten Tomatoes: 95% (excellent; 244 reviews).
  • Metascore: 76/100
  • Cinemascore: B - (A+ to F).
Awards:
Rene won two awards for this movie:
  • San Diego Films Critics Society - Best Supporting Actress; and
  • Saturn Awards - Best Supporting Actress.
Next week, I'll bring out some details about Rene's character in Nightcrawler, Nina Romina... it's one of my favorite characters of her entire career!

hope u enjoy it.
love u guys.
