At his interview, Ben reveals he used to work for a phone book company. And for his first day at work, Mr. Whittaker tries to dress impeccable. To begin with his work, he is informed by Jules's assistant Becky (Christina Scherer) that he has a meeting with her at exactly 3:55 pm, and he should be prompt because there's another meeting at 4:00 pm. Becky also tells him to talk fast and blink a lot, because her boss is disturbed by people who do not. In the meeting, Jules informs him that she will not have much for him to do. However, she will email him if something comes up.

During all the movie, Ben begins a relationship with the company massagist Fiona Farwell (Rene Russo), who appears massaging his back, making him more calm... It's evident that he is very attracted to her. But also Ben is committed to Jules, and even breaks into her mother's house to delete an embarrassing e-mail and avoiding to get arrested (for me that's the funniest part of this movie!!!)
Robert de Niro and Rene Russo: between excitement and laughs!

Unfortunately, Jules is under pressure to give up her work, because the investors feel that she is unable to cope with the workload, and she believes she'll have more time at home with her family. When driving Paige home from a party, Ben discovers that Matt is having an affair with another parent at Paige's school. While on a business trip in San Francisco to interview a potential CEO candidate, Jules reveals that she knows about Matt's cheating, but did not confront Matt about it because she was not ready to deal with it.

The ending of the movie is when Jules tries to hire a CEO to save her marriage with Matt (Anders Holm). And even Ben ending happily together with Fiona, he supports Jules in her dreams.

Rene Russo soooo beautiful as Fiona Farwell.

Plot Summary: Roy McAvoy (Kevin Costner, great in The Bodyguard, Dance with Wolves, Hidden Figures and many others), known also as Tin Cup, is a failed pro golfer who lives in a driving range along with sidekick and caddy Romeo Posar (Cheech Marin) in Salome, located in West Texas. One day, a beautiful woman called Molly Griswold (Rene Russo) comes in and appears at Mr. McAvoy's driving range for golf lessons. What Roy doesn't know is that the girl he loves is David Simms (Don Johnson)' girlfriend, and Simms is McAvoy's longtime nemesis.

Falling in love for Molly, Roy decides to become her patient; in order to earn her respect, he decides to try to qualify for the US Open, after starting off as Simms' caddy "for the benefit of his experience". MacAvoy's talent proves more then adequate, but over-confident negligence of risks, while pleasing the crowds, is murder on his scores, while Simms spits on the fans, and that proves when David refuses to sign an autograph for a child... and Ms. Griswold encouraged Simms to be himself.
After a wager against David, Roy won the bet and Molly's heart too. Now, with renewed confidence, Roy "Tin Cup" McAvoy, a nobody from nowhere, shocks the golf world by breaking the U.S. Open record for a single round by shooting a 62, thus making the cut. Roy's third round is also excellent and moves him into contention, but on all three rounds, he refuses to lay up on the par-5 18th hole, hitting the ball into the water hazard each time.

And on the last day, Roy, David and golf pro Peter Jacobsen are on a battle to win the US Open... and once again, after the hitting the water hazard several times, McAvoy hits the green straight to the hole.
And after the tournament, Molly gained lots of clients and prepares a career of helping players with the mental portion of the game.... Roy and Molly end the movie together, and both share a kiss.

Fun Facts about the movie:
  • This movie saved entirely Kevin Costner's acting career, after the disaster of the movie Waterworld (1995).
  • In 2015, when Kevin (Costner) received the honorary prize in the Critics Choice Awards, Rene Russo praised him and Tin Cup: "It was a really good movie, and he is a really good kisser."
  • Many of Roy McAvoy's golf shots were done by Kevin Costner himself.
  • Kevin Costner is a master of sports movies. Besides Tin Cup, he did Bull Durham (1988), also directed by Ron Shelton; Field of Dreams (1989); For the Love of the Game (1999), and recently, MacFarland, USA (2015).
  • Some scenes of this movie were filmed in Kingwood, Texas; Tubac, Arizona; and Charlotte, North Carolina.

  • IMDB: 6,3/10
  • Rotten Tomatoes: 69% (mixed to positive; 48 reviews)

In the Line of Fire (MOVIE REVIEW)

Poster for the movie In the Line of Fire, starring Clint Eastwood, Rene Russo & John Malkovich.
(photo credits: Columbia Pictures/Castle Rock Entertainment)
Director: Wolfgang Petersen.
Producer: Jeff Apple.
Writer: Jeff Maguire.
Main Cast:
Clint Eastwood ------ Frank Horrigan
John Malkovich ------ Mitch Leary / John Booth / James Carney
Rene Russo ------ Lilly Raines
Dylan McDermott ---- Al D'Andrea
Gary Cole ------- Bill Watts
John Mahoney --- Sam Campagna

Rene Russo & Clint Eastwood: great chemistry in scene.
(photo credits: Columbia Pictures/Castle Rock Entertainment)
Release Date: July 9, 1993 (USA) / October 22, 1993 (Brazil)
Running Time: 128 min.
Budget / Box office: US$40 million / US$177 million (box office hit success)
Plot Summary: Frank Horrigan (played by actor/director Clint Eastwood) is a veteran Secret Service agent who is close to retirement. He keeps thinking back to November 22, 1963, when we was a hand-picked agent for President John Kennedy, and, became one of the few to lose a president to an assassin after Kennedy's death. 30 years later, the USA President is the target of former CIA assassin Mitch Leary (John Malkovich, great in Dangerous Liaisons & Con Air), because the assassin felt betrayed by the government. That's the reason for what Leary plans to kill the president.

Rene Russo in a wonderful performance as Lilly Raines.

Later, Mr. Horrigan and his partner, Al D'Andrea (Dylan McDermott, from Hamburger Hill & Steel Magnolias) go to the White House meet the other agents, the director Sam Campagna (John Mahoney, from Frasier); Bill Watts (Gary Cole), a young assistant; and Lilly Raines (Rene Russo), the female agent of the Secret Service team, who is enchanted by Frank, and vice-versa. And that is proved when Mr. Horrigan takes Ms. Raines to the Lincoln Memorial, and both eat an ice cream.  He says to her that he believes that female agents work in the Service simply because the President wishes to court the female vote throughout the country. By the time Lilly walks away, Frank thinks to himself: "If she looks back, that means she's interested."
By the movie goes by, Horrigan suspects that Leary uses lot of false identities, such as Joseph McCrawley, John Booth and James Carney, and the assassin makes lots of victims, including Al.
The ending, in my opinion, is fantastic, and it happens in Los Angeles. Leary, now as James Carney, points his plastic gun at Frank, who tries to save the president, but who ended shot was Mr. Horrigan... and everybody ran away. After that, the killer takes Horrigan to the elevator, up up and away, and what surprised him is that the agent had a bulletproof vest. Agent Raines, with all the agents, witness the scene.
At the hotel elevator, Leary breaks the glass, and both fight there, and at the end, the killer loses balance until his sudden death, thrown up high in the elevator. And Frank ends the movie happily ever after with Lilly Raines, now acclaimed as a hero (and himself decided to announce his retirement).

Rene Russo: concentration and elegance.
(photo credits: Columbia Pictures/Castle Rock Entertainment)

Fun Facts about the movie:
  • Rene Russo and John Malkovich will reunite together 25 years after this movie, in Velvet Buzzsaw, by Dan Gilroy, premiering October 26, on Netflix.
  • Also in a Wolfgang Petersen movie, Rene Russo portrayed the main character's love interest/female lead, both in the movies In the Line of Fire (1993) and Outbreak (1995).
  • Clint Eastwood (Frank Horrigan) and Dylan McDermott (Al D'Andrea)'s characters used Sig Sauer 9mm pistols (Secret Service weapons).
  • Clint is also a professional jazz pianist, that's why he did his own piano scenes in this movie.
  • And one of my favorite villians of John Malkovich, along with Con Air (1997), and Dangerous Liaisons (1988). In the movie In the Line of Fire, he improvised the scene when he puts his gun on his mouth.
Critical Reception:
  • IMDB: 7,2/10
  • Rotten Tomatoes: 95% (fresh; 96 reviews).
  • CinemaScore : A (A+ to F).
  • Metascore: 74/100.

Next week, on July 30, I'll talk about Lilly Raines on "Character on Focus"...

Release Date: August 6, 1999 (USA) / September 3, 1999 (Brazil)
Running Time: 113 min.
Budget / Box office: $48 million / $124.3 million (box office success).
Plot summary: Based on the 1968 movie of the same name. In the remake, Thomas Crown (Pierce Brosnan, great in Mrs. Doubtfire & 007 movies), a self-made billionaire, is bored of everything he desires, but he's irresistible to women. Therefore, Thomas has a hobby - stealing art masterpieces.
After the theft of a Monet painting (stolen by Thomas Crown), the only person who suspects Crown is Catherine Olds Banning (Rene Russo), a sexy insurance investigator, but smart, driven and alone. Her job: get the painting back to the MET Museum, in New York City.
But in the middle of the investigation, Catherine falls in love with Thomas in an unexpected way. The romance happens in three moments: a black and white ball, a gliding flight and two days in Martinique (France).
Back in Manhattan, Catherine thinks she has reason to be jealous, so when he suggests they go off together, she hesitates... because the insurance investigator also suspects that there's another woman in Thomas' life, Anna (Esther Cañadas), which makes Ms. Banning very unsure to trust Crown.
The ending is when Catherine, shaken and fallen apart, is on plane to Britain. A hand reaches through the seats from behind her and gives her a handkerchief while using a voice that doesn't quite sound right. She looks in the seat behind her to find Crown. She leaps at him, furious at his actions. "Did you set this up?" shouts Catherine to Thomas, and her screams were listened by the stewardess.
And both kissed each other. While Ms.Banning hugs Mr. Crown, she whispers, in a seductive way, in his ear: "If you pull a stunt like that again... I'll break both your arms!"

Fun Facts about the movie:
  • There are several changes comparing the remake from the 1968 original (directed by Norman Jewison), most notable for the amount of intimacy and nudity scenes between Catherine (Rene Russo) & Thomas Crown (Pierce Brosnan).
  • Rene Russo's clothes were entirely done by Michael Kors for the Celine collection. Along with her hairdo used in the movie, Rene's Catherine Banning was her best character done in her entire acting career.
  • Rene Russo did her first nude scenes of her career in Thomas Crown Affair.
  • First of two remakes John McTiernan did from Norman Jewison movies. The other movie was Rollerball (2002), starring Rebecca Romjin, Jean Reno & rapper LL Cool J.
  • When Catherine (Rene Russo) is at Martinique (France), she drapes a white towel around her breasts... and when she "lassos" her towel around Thomas' neck took sixteen takes to get it just right. Weights were added to the towel to get it to work correctly.
  • And in Rene's recent interviews on TV, many of the interviewers ask of... Thomas Crown Affair. According to Rene (Russo): "Many women ask of him (Pierce Brosnan)... what was he like? Is he cute? Is he dreamy? Yes he is. He's a good kisser. (...) For the love scenes, are always really hard! (laughs)" (see "Rene's Valentine's Day Special" post)
Rene Russo: concentration in scene. (photo credits: MGM Pictures)
Critical Reception:
  • IMDB: 6,8/10
  • Rotten Tomatoes: 70% (100 reviews, fresh).
  • Metascore: 72/100
  • AdoroCinema (Brazil): 4/5

and Nina. (photo credits: Open Road Films)
Release Date: September 5, 2014 (TIFF/Canada) / October 31, 2014 (USA) / December 18, 2014 (Brazil)
Running Time: 117 min.
Budget / Box office: $8.5 million / $50.3 million (Box office success).
Plot summary: Los Angeles, California. The thief Louis Bloom (Jake Gyllenhaal, great in Donnie Darko, Brokeback Mountain), known as Lou, has been caught stealing from a L.A. construction site by a security guard. To get rid of the crime, Lou attacks the guard, steals the watch and runs away with the material. After selling this material, Lou asks for a job, but the construction supervisor tells him he doesn't hire thieves.
While driving home, Lou sees a car crash on the middle of the road... and the freelance photojournalists arrive and record two police officers pulling a wounded woman from the crash. One of these photojournalists, Joe Loder (Bill Paxton, of Twister), tells Lou that they sell their footage to local news stations.

Inspired, Lou steals a bike and trades it for a recording camera and a police radio scanner. After two failed attempts, he records a fatal carjacking and sells it to KWLA (channel 6). The morning news director, Nina Romina (Rene Russo), tells him the station is interested in footage of graphic/violent incidents (such as accidents involving cars, buses, trains, planes, etc.) in influent areas. And for the job to be more efficient and with more impact, Lou hires an assistant, Rick (Riz Ahmed), a young man desperate for money, and begins tampering crime scenes. In one of them, he moves a body. As Lou's work gains attention, he buys better equipment and a faster car.

Rene, as always, doesn't lose her elegance!!!
Then, Lou and Nina go to a Mexican restaurant, talking about his sucess as a reporter. But things go wrong when he threatens her to end her business unless she has sex with him. And her job depend on his footage. Nina agrees hesitantly.
The following day, Lou turns down an offer from Loder, who beats him in a plane crash story in Foothill, and Nina scolded her job partner (Lou), explaining him to get better footage! To give Loder the payback, Lou sabotaged his van, leaving him injured.
Later, Lou and Rick arrive before the police at a home invasion in Granada Hills, and Lou records the shooters leaving with their SUV. Result: Nina is so anxious with this story.... in return, Lou requests more public credit and money.
And the climax begins when detective Frontieri (Michael Hyatt) doubts Lou about the home invasion footage, and he gives his edited version, cutting out the shooters' footage parts. Posterior to that, he and Rick follow the shooters to a more crowded area, and then, Lou's assistant claims half of the money of the initial request, menacing to tell the police about Lou's crimes, and he admits.
The shooters enter at the restaurant, and Lou phones the police. They shoot each other, and one of the suspects is killed while the other escapes with the SUV. And soon after the shooter's SUV crashes, Lou persuades Rick to film him, saying he's dead, but in reality it was contrary: the shooter was alive; and shoots Rick through the glass and tries to flee. But Lou's assistant is dead by the police. So Lou said to Rick he couldn't work with someone who has more advantage than him.
Rene as Nina Romina. Chic as always!
The ending of Nightcrawler is when Nina was amazed with Lou's final footage involving Rick, and she expresses her devotion by him. But the news team found out that the home invasion didn't work out; and Nina refused to report the information to maximize the impact. Result: The police tries to confiscate the evidence, but Nina defend the right to reserve it.
And Lou hires a team of freelancers and interns, and buys new vans to grow his business.

Fun facts about the movie:
- Nina Romina was specially written for Rene Russo, his wife in real life. For Gilroy, Nina was described as "hard-nosed corporate malicious woman". And Russo brought a sense of vulnerability to the character.
- Jake Gyllenhaal and Rene Russo had a very great chemistry in scene; and they would work again in Velvet Buzzsaw (also directed by Dan Gilroy) this year, premiering October 26, on Netflix.
- Jake had his own idea of losing 20 pounds for this movie. He visualized Lou as a hungry coyote.
- Like Donnie Darko (2001) and Prisoners (2013), Jake Gyllenhaal blinked rarely in Nightcrawler. And Donnie Darko is one of my favorite movies of Jake.
- And it was also Dan Gilroy's directorial debut after years producing movies. Some of them were starred by Rene Russo, such as Freejack (1992) and Two for the Money (2005).

Critical reception:

  • IMDB: 7,9/10
  • Rotten Tomatoes: 95% (excellent; 244 reviews).
  • Metascore: 76/100
  • Cinemascore: B - (A+ to F).
Awards:
Rene won two awards for this movie:
  • San Diego Films Critics Society - Best Supporting Actress; and
  • Saturn Awards - Best Supporting Actress.
Next week, I'll bring out some details about Rene's character in Nightcrawler, Nina Romina... it's one of my favorite characters of her entire career!

The operation starts, Salt and Daniels escape in the helicopter to the ship where Betsy was, and Daniels carries a photo of the monkey to release it to the media. Both discover that a Cedar Creek resident, Mrs. Jeffries (Gina Menza), discovers that her daughter Kate (Kara Keough) was playing with Betsy in the yard... so the CDC was warned about the situation.
