CHARACTER IN FOCUS: Molly Griswold, "Tin Cup" (1996)

Rene Russo along with Kevin Costner in scene of Tin Cup (1996)
(photo credits - Warner Bros. Pictures)
In the movie Tin Cup (1996), Dr. Molly Griswold, played by the gorgeous and lovely actress Rene Russo, was clinical psychologist with a difficult new client. She agrees to help down-on-his-luck former golf prodigy Roy McAvoy, played by Kevin Costner (great in Bull Durham, Dance with Wolves, The Bodyguard and many others) regain his confidence in exchange for golf lessons for Ms. Griswold. It’s unclear, though, whether he’s more interested in getting back on the golf course, or just for the love of the girl. But what Roy doesn't know is that Molly is David (Don Johnson)'s girlfriend. And David is Roy's longtime golf rival.

What we know about Molly... she is intelligent, outgoing and confident. She lives by the advice she gives Roy: “Just be honest and take a risk.” (Molly said that line almost on the end of the movie). Of course, she told him that to help him ask out another woman, like Doreen (Linda Hart), but she’s starting to think that Roy has the potential to make her happy – as unlikely as that seems on the surface.

And after the movie... Kevin and Rene met again in 2015, on Critics' Choice Awards, when Kevin (Costner) received the honorary prize. Ms. Russo praised him and the movie: "It was a really good movie, and he is a really good kisser... I mean, he's a really good kisser." Both of them remain friends until today.

Hope u like it.

Release Date: August 16, 1996 (USA) / November 1, 1996 (Brazil).
Running Time: 135 min.
Budget / Box Office: US$45 million / US$75,9 million (box office success).
Plot Summary: Roy McAvoy (Kevin Costner, great in The Bodyguard, Dance with Wolves, Hidden Figures and many others), known also as Tin Cup, is a failed pro golfer who lives in a driving range along with sidekick and caddy Romeo Posar (Cheech Marin) in Salome, located in West Texas. One day, a beautiful woman called Molly Griswold (Rene Russo) comes in and appears at Mr. McAvoy's driving range for golf lessons. What Roy doesn't know is that the girl he loves is David Simms (Don Johnson)' girlfriend, and Simms is McAvoy's longtime nemesis.

Falling in love for Molly, Roy decides to become her patient; in order to earn her respect, he decides to try to qualify for the US Open, after starting off as Simms' caddy "for the benefit of his experience". MacAvoy's talent proves more then adequate, but over-confident negligence of risks, while pleasing the crowds, is murder on his scores, while Simms spits on the fans, and that proves when David refuses to sign an autograph for a child... and Ms. Griswold encouraged Simms to be himself.
After a wager against David, Roy won the bet and Molly's heart too. Now, with renewed confidence, Roy "Tin Cup" McAvoy, a nobody from nowhere, shocks the golf world by breaking the U.S. Open record for a single round by shooting a 62, thus making the cut. Roy's third round is also excellent and moves him into contention, but on all three rounds, he refuses to lay up on the par-5 18th hole, hitting the ball into the water hazard each time.

And on the last day, Roy, David and golf pro Peter Jacobsen are on a battle to win the US Open... and once again, after the hitting the water hazard several times, McAvoy hits the green straight to the hole.
And after the tournament, Molly gained lots of clients and prepares a career of helping players with the mental portion of the game.... Roy and Molly end the movie together, and both share a kiss.

Fun Facts about the movie:
  • This movie saved entirely Kevin Costner's acting career, after the disaster of the movie Waterworld (1995).
  • In 2015, when Kevin (Costner) received the honorary prize in the Critics Choice Awards, Rene Russo praised him and Tin Cup: "It was a really good movie, and he is a really good kisser."
  • Many of Roy McAvoy's golf shots were done by Kevin Costner himself.
  • Kevin Costner is a master of sports movies. Besides Tin Cup, he did Bull Durham (1988), also directed by Ron Shelton; Field of Dreams (1989); For the Love of the Game (1999), and recently, MacFarland, USA (2015).
  • Some scenes of this movie were filmed in Kingwood, Texas; Tubac, Arizona; and Charlotte, North Carolina.

  • IMDB: 6,3/10
  • Rotten Tomatoes: 69% (mixed to positive; 48 reviews)

Rene Russo's Fashion Lookbook: Hats, Hats, Hats!!!

Rene Russo, chic and elegant, for Max Factor ad. HOW CHARMING!
(photo: Archive pictures)
When a chic woman, just like Rene Russo, wears a gorgeous hat on the catwalk/runway, she feels more attractive, sexy, elegant and avant-garde... and what about when Ms. Russo uses her hat as an everyday woman, in terms of fashion?
Well... let's check it out,  so that you, girls, may be inspired by these ideas of hats that I'll show you.

Rene Russo in her garden, and wearing a cowboy hat... very lovely. These pics are from 2005.
(photo: Archive pictures)
Cowgirl style hat - Like in this photo above, this cowgirl hat is perfect for the summer. It's very popular in the whole world, such in United States (like in states like Texas, for example), and while wearing this type of hat, it's accompanied by jeans, leather, some impact accessories, sleeveless shirts, and mainly leather boots. It's all about "leatha", baby!!!

And she was amazing wearing a straw hat! (photo: Warner Bros. Pictures)
Gorgeous as always, Rene Russo wearing a straw hat, along with tight jeans and brown suede boots...

Straw Hat -
Rene Russo used this type of hat before, when she was Molly Griswold in the wonderful movie Tin Cup (1996), by Ron Shelton (the movie will be my next topic on this blog!). This wonderful actress combined her hat with a white blouse and leather pants (and some pearls).
Also a great Ms. Russo moment was in 2015, in Los Angeles, California. We all loved the way she harmonizes her hat with her tight jeans, loose white shirt and brown suede boots. She looks elegant, charming and sexy! #workitgirl !

And for the winter, Rene Russo uses a black Fedora hat while carrying her Longchamp
bag in NYC streets... Great choice!! #love (photo credits: Splash News/Alarmy Stock

Fedora Hat - This hat is one my favorites among all of them. Perfect for the summer or winter, day or night. And Rene wearing this black fedora hat in New York City streets at night, it makes her a "jetsetter woman", and besides, chic and very seductive (specially many men wanna look at Ms. Russo and say, "who's that wonderful lady walking down that street?" ) .  This hat's used since the 50's (Marilyn Monroe's era) and is still fashion forward.

Hope u like it.

My favorite looks from Rene Russo on the Red Carpet/Fashion & Movie Premiere Events - Part 1

Rene Russo in the "Miracle" premiere in 2004. She was a bit careless of leaving the shirt half-open... but I don't mind... I think she looks very sexy with this half-open shirt... (photo credits: J. Merritt/Getty Images).

Rene Russo's early modeling career even influenced her way she dresses. As Rene is very stylish... so it has so much looks I like both on red carpet and fashion/movie premiere events... I'm going to split this post in two parts!

Rene in the "Lethal Weapon 3" premiere, 1992. (photo credits: Time & Life Pictures)

"Lethal Weapon 3" premiere, 1992.
Some fashion specialists & viewers think this dress is dark blue, others think this dress is black... but the dress Rene Russo wore on the "Lethal Weapon 3" premiere in 1992 is something any woman can wear (specially me - and black and blue are my favorite colors). It's chic, perfect for a casual night. The length was perfect for her... the back is very pretty!!! #loveitverymuch.

The yellow (with a little bleach) dress Rene wore on "Tin Cup" premiere on 1996 is very radiant. And perfect for the summer. It fitted her like a glove.

"Today Show", December 2014 - "Nightcrawler".
The two-piece look Rene wore on "Today Show" on December 2014 was praised by many people... The black coat and the white dress (underneath) showed the balance of the entire ensemble - it showed elegance, sexiness and class!

"Ransom" premiere, 1996.
Even Rene Russo is elegant in a suit. Despite this suit Rene wore in "Ransom" premiere in 1996 is for the office environment... She was very praised by many viewers & fashion specialists... !!!

"Nightcrawler" - "Good Morning America", October 2014.
Last but not least... her entire white look is DEFINITELY my favorite look of this list... Since white means simplicity in fashion, this ensemble is more than simplicity, in my opinion. It includes also elegance and sexiness too (her pose in this photo means everything). Elegance is not missing in her vocabulary!!!

This post has a continuation June 4.

About Rene Russo, part 1

Rene Russo on two moments: Lethal Weapon 4 (1998) and Thomas Crown Affair (1999).

Beautiful, chic, versatile, talented, and very, very attractive actress. Those are my words about Rene Russo.

Rene Marie Russo, or simply Rene Russo, was born in Burbank, California, on February 17, 1954. She's daughter of Shirley Balocca, a barmaid and factory laborer, and Nino Russo, a sculptor and mechanic, and also sister of Toni Lynn Russo (Toni was known as one of the wives of Bernie Taupin, a famous singer). Unfortunately, her father left the family when Rene was just two years old.

In junior high school, Rene was plagued with scoliosis and had to wear a full-torso brace, and she suffered bullying from her classmates, because of her being tall, earning the nickname of "Jolly Green Giant". When she entered high school, she removed her brace, but still was alone, and Rene dropped out of high-school when she was on tenth grade.
After that, she took lots of part-time jobs: she sold refreshments on a theater, worked as a restaurant hostess and worked a cashier in Disneyland. Her last job was a full-time job at an eyeglass factory, inspecting contact lenses.

When Rene was 17, she was attending a Rolling Stones concert and was approached by ICM (International Creative Management) scout John Crosby, who told her she should be a model and had test photos of her. And some months later, Rene signed a contract to Ford Modeling Agency and soon she became a successful model and her modeling breaktrough came when she was on the cover of Vogue magazine.

Since 1975, Rene appeared on many magazine covers, including Vogue, Elle, Harpers' Bazaar and even Cosmpolitan (she is a record holder of Cosmpolitan, and her last cover was in September 1981), was one of the most succesful models of America, and was also seen on TV comercials through the 80s.

When Rene was 30, her modeling career began to detrace, like most models at that age. She began to study theater, acting, an intense period of literature and Christian theology. And also began appearing in theater roles at small regional theaters on Los Angeles and the entire California state.

She debuted acting on TV in 1987, in the TV series Sable (1987), portraying Eden Kendell, the main character's girlfriend, but her cinema debut was in Major League (1989), and she was Lynn Wells, Jake Taylor (Tom Berenger)'s wife. Following her debut, she was Cindy Jo in the comedy Mr. Destiny (1990). One of my favorite scenes of her in that movie was when she said "Happy Birthday" to Larry (Jim Belushi) and looked very attractive. In 1991, in her first dramatic role, Rene did One Good Cop (1991), along with Michael Keaton and she portrayed Rita Lewis.

In 1992, she starred Freejack (1992), along with Emilio Estevez, and she interpreted Julie, Alex (Emilio Estevez)'s girlfriend. The movie was not a success, but Rene was nominated for a Saturn Award for Best Supporting Actress. The breakout success was also in the same year, in the movie Lethal Weapon 3 (1992), a box-office success. She was the internal affairs detective Lorna Cole, later reprising her role on Lethal Weapon 4 in 1998, now as Martin Riggs' (Mel Gibson) wife.

Between 1993 and 1996, Rene Russo had major roles in very successful movies, such as In the Line of Fire (1993), as Lilly Raines, Outbreak (1995), as Robby Keough, Get Shorty (1995), as Karen Flores, Tin Cup (1996), as Molly Griswold, and Ransom (1996), as Kate Mullen. She has been praised by her ability to hold her own against her male co-stars, such as Mel Gibson, Clint Eastwood, Dustin Hoffman, John Travolta and Kevin Costner.

In 1997, she did her first main character, Trudy Lintz from Buddy (1997). And in 1999, she did the remake of Thomas Crown Affair (1999), portraying Catherine Banning (Faye Dunaway did Catherine in the 1968 original). Her acting, style, and even her chemistry with Pierce Brosnan were praised. I think Rene's Catherine Banning was the most stylish character she've ever done in her entire career. And in 2000, Rene portrayed Natasha Fatale in the cartoon-adapted movie The Adventures of Rocky and Bullwinkle (2000).

In 2002, Rene amended Showtime (2002) with Big Trouble (2002). In Showtime, she portrayed Chase, an executive producer from a TV show, and in Big Trouble, portrayed Anna Herk, Jenny (Zooey Deschanel)'s devoted mother.

In 2005, Rene also amended two movies: Two for the Money (2005), who worked also as an executive producer; and Yours, Mine and Ours (2005). In Two for the Money, she portrayed Toni, Walter (Al Pacino)'s wife, and begins a relationship with Brandon (Matthew McConaughey). And in Yours, Mine and Ours, Rene was Helen, Frank (Dennis Quaid)'s wife, and mother of 18 kids.

After Yours, Mine and Ours, Rene Russo had an acting hiatus of 6 years, and just come back acting in 2011.

To be continued.
2nd part of biography next Tuesday.

love u guys.
